Explanation of the symbolism

Though his actual identity is contested, the figure of St Dionysius the Areopagite has been attributed with descriptions of the Celestial Hierarchy which have influenced the breadth of Western theology and metaphysics. Péladan quotes him heavily as a supreme authority on these matters that are at the heart of his cosmology, so he is especially significant to this series.

For this icon I have fused elements from several traditional Greek ones: the depiction of St Dionysius himself; a rare icon featuring the nine Orders of Angels, and elements from depictions of the Hosts and Orders. The nine circles surrounding St Dionysius contain the nine orders. Above him, the dove of the Holy Spirit erupts from the All-Seeing Eye, representing the divinely inspired knowledge that reached Dionysius. He holds the image of He Who Is; the divine aspect of the Christ, who is in turn supported by a Seraph. Known as "the burning ones," the Seraphim are the highest in the order of angels and the closest to the Divine.

The ornamentation chosen is from Hagia Sophia, Constantinople.
