Explanation of the symbolism

The myth of Prometheus is key to Péladan's thought regarding the human condition, and he idealises him throughout his work. This is the first painting I created for this series, with the intention of making an icon that I imagined Péladan placing with reverence in his living space.

I have used the icon type for St. John the Baptist, which is apt in numerous ways that I shall leave to the viewer to contemplate. Here, Prometheus has endured, and been liberated from his shackles by Heracles, following a thousand years of torture. Chains hang from his wrists, a hole remains where his liver was plucked out daily by the eagle (at the top left), and Heracles' club rests at the bottom as a reminder of his ordeals. Yet Prometheus stands triumphant, holding the human androgyne close to his chest, and carrying the divine fire in a celery stalk (as per the myth) as his gift to humanity.
Two phoenixes in the corners reflect the fire symbolism, and I have used the ornamentation traditionally found in some ecclesiastic icons to emphasise his status.

The border ornamentation is taken from a variety of frescoes found in Orthodox churches, but the style is found in the late antique period as well.

Commissions

If the original has sold, I will not create an identical copy for you, but I am happy to discuss making a fresh icon using slightly different materials. Please contact me at [email protected] with your specifications.
