Description

This image reflects the dialogue between Satan and the archangel Michael in the tale of the Fall as described in Istar. Lucifer has been bound and caged by Michael, by divine decree, and is imprisoned within the angelic seal.

In the illustration, a mage stands in a circle overlooking the same mountains as those in Illustration 4 (Bene-Satan) and is performing a ritual, holding the thread with which the angelic sigil is sealed.

It is for the reader to decide whether the mage is binding Lucifer and completing Michael’s task, or liberating him.

There is no correct answer. Both are possible. But the answer, Péladan might say, will reveal much of the viewer’s own place on the path.
