Explanation of the symbolism

Sappho is one of several historical women (Hypatia, Diotima, and others) whom Péladan highlights as embodying the ideals that modern women should strive towards.

Here I have used one of the Fayyum portraits for her face and jewllery, and a depiction from an Ancient Greek Attic vase for her clothing. She holds a lyre and is enclosed within a cithara, reflecting her profession. Since she was known as the tenth muse, this is flanked by symbols of the other nine Muses. The ornamentation and colour scheme reflect early classical pottery. The poem on the cithara, one of her own, precisely reflects Péladan's thought and presumably, is one of the elements that inspired him when speaking admiringly of Sappho: What is beautiful is good, and who is good will soon be beautiful.
